Heartburn is a situation where irritation occurs as a result of a reflux – when the stomach acid backs up and comes in contact with the lining of the esophagus. This condition is normally experienced after eating. For every effect, there is a cause, and for every motion, there is a corresponding force. Heartburn causes can differ greatly from persons.
Modern lifestyles and the pleasures they come along with equally bring to us some negative effects that we may not be aware of. Lets quickly walk through some of the commonest causes of heartburn.
There is a muscle, a valve called "the lower esophageal sphincter" (LES) it functions as: (i) Controls the opening between the esophagus and the stomach and (ii) Keeps stomach acid in the stomach, prevent reflux When this valve or muscle is weakened or relaxed, heartburn definitely will occur. From observation and research, this is the greater form of Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) of which heartburn is part.
Weakening of this muscle can be caused by intake of Nicotine. Products that contain nicotine are cigarettes, coffee, kola nuts etc
Diets – the choice of food of each individual makes up what he/she is comprised of. Consumption of lots of fatty foods, alcohol, sugar, chocolate and fried foods can also weaken the lower esophageal sphincter
The frequency of food intake can also allow for heartburn. An expert advised that you could eat smaller meals rather than eat three large ones. When the stomach is stuffed, it can cause much concentration of stomach acid, which would in turn allow for heartburn reflux.
Eating immediately before bedtime
Much pressure on the stomach.
Exercises that exert pressure on the stomach are frequent wearing of tight clothes, lifting and bending over. Too much of food intake can also cause excess production of stomach acid
Stress – continuous feeling that prevents relaxation.
