# Strong tea and coffee, processed foods should be avoided for dandruff.

What shampoo to use to treat dandruff?

There is no official branded shampoo for dandruff. Doctors usually recommend Nizoral, a medicated shampoo available only in drug stores as an anti-dandruff shampoo. It is medically proven and the effect is long lasting.

Some myths about dandruff –

# Fenugreek seeds – ground into a fine paste, applied onto scalp, and left for half an hour.

# Juice of bitter gourd when massaged with oil onto scalp relieves dandruff.

# Boil some neem leaves in 4 teacups of water. After cooling and filtering, use for washing hair.

Treatment for dandruff is not a one-time affair. Dandruff comes back, if regular care on a daily basis is not taken.

Consult a doctor if your scalp is red and itchy – or if the skin is flaky around the eyebrows, round the nose or behind the ears – because this suggests you might be having a more severe form of seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Swelling of the feet can be painful to some women, due to which they may not be able to move about or do their normal work as the months pass on. In some women, the swelling of the feet is very temporary; it subsides when the woman takes rest for a while, or massages the feet.

Simple Remedies to Prevent and Treat Swelling of Feet during Pregnancy

- Drink a lot of water when you are pregnant. You must drink at least six to eight glasses of water per day. Water is the most natural therapy to flush out the excess toxins from the body. Thus, the water will expel all the toxic fluids of the body which would otherwise settle in the feet and cause them to swell. Drinking a lot of water could increase the frequency of urination in pregnant women, but that is actually a good sign, as urination is a way to expel the wastes from the body.

- Avoid remaining in a standing position for long periods of time. This gives direct access for the fluids to enter into the lower parts of the body and cause the feet to swell up.

- Keep your diet well-balanced. This is extremely important for a pregnant woman. If the diet is deficient in any kind of food, or if the woman takes the wrong kind of food, then there is more chance of undigested toxic wastes accumulating in the body, and causing the feet to swell.

- Do not wear tight trousers or jeans when you are pregnant, as this would increase the pressure on the legs. Instead, you could wear somewhat loose stockings or pantyhose to give good support to the feet.

- While sleeping, try to change your position frequently. Lying in a single position for a long time will increase the pressure on one side of the body and increase the chances of the feet getting swollen up. You can put some elevated support for the feet, such as propping them up on cushions or pillows, so that the fluid does not accumulate into the feet region.

- Here’s a recipe for preventing the swelling of feet during pregnancy. Take two cups of water and add a teaspoonful of palm sugar in it. Add two teaspoons of fennel seeds to it. Boil this mixture, till the volume reduces to half; i.e. only one cupful of water is left. Drink this mixture thrice in a day. It will help protect the feet from getting swollen.

- Add a few tablespoons of coriander in two cups of water. Boil this mixture till it reduces to half its quantity, i.e. to one cup. Drink this coriander decoction thrice in a day. It will prevent from swelling of feet during pregnancy. In order to improve the taste, you can add sugar and milk to it, so that it becomes like a herbal tea.

- The most important thing to prevent feet from swelling up during pregnancy is to keep them exercised often. Pregnant women tend to reduce their normal activities in the fear that it would harm the fetus. But in fact, the opposite is true. Walking for half an hour per day is ideal. Keep your feet moving about. This is a very sure way of preventing the accumulation of fluids in the feet.

- While sitting, do not press your legs by crossing them. Keep them free and separated so that there is no undue pressure on them.

Clinical Depression Symptoms

Clinical depression, sometimes known as unipolar depression or major depression, can be described as a type of depression where the symptoms are persistent and severe enough to warrant clinical intervention by a health professional. This is not the same as feeling fed up, down in the dumps or being moody. When someone is suffering from clinical depression, the individual's daily life is filled with sadness and despair to the point that it interferes with their ability to get on with their normal daily routines. It differs from normal depression in that although a person who feels they are depressed can have feelings of sadness, lethargy and lack interest in things that used to give them pleasure; the symptoms associated with clinical depression are much more severe.

Diagnostic Criteria

To be diagnosed with clinical depression, at least five of the following symptoms of clinical depression must have existed for longer than two weeks and with a tendency to last for between four and six months, which are also accompanied by a depressed mood or anhedonia. Anhedonia can be described as an inability to find pleasure in events that would normally be considered pleasurable, for example, social interactions, eating and sex. The symptoms must also not be related to any obvious cause such as bereavement.

• Overwhelming feelings of sadness and despair, perhaps accompanied by fear, or feeling empty. Someone who feels empty may feel devoid of emotion, numb, unable to feel anything emotionally.

• Feeling less interested or completely uninterested in nearly all daily activities and unable to find any pleasure in carrying out normal daily routines or activities that were previously enjoyed.

• Changes in appetite resulting in either an increase or decrease in weight. This could take the form of eating too much, comfort eating and cravings for carbohydrates or chocolate, or having little or no appetite and unable to face food.

• Disturbed sleep patterns. This might involve an inability to sleep (insomnia) where the person often lies awake at night, or is sleeping too much (hypersomnia) and can't get out of bed in the morning

• Feeling agitated or experiencing psychomotor retardations almost every day. Agitation can manifest itself in many ways including extreme restlessness, pacing up and down a room, wringing hands, masturbating, indulging in purposeless pursuits, or any similar type of behaviour. Psychomotor retardation is where thoughts and physical movement slow right down so everything is happening at a slower pace

• Mental or physical fatigue and a lack of energy, which could mean difficulty in finding the strength or motivation to do anything, even the simplest of tasks

• Overwhelming feelings of guilt and hopelessness, feeling worthless, lonely and isolated possibly accompanied by feelings of anxiety too

• Finding it difficult to concentrate or focus or make decisions, perhaps less able to take things in and possibly suffering from memory lapses such as forgetting appointments etc.

• Recurrent thoughts of death, but not fear of death, and suicide with or without a plan to carry this out, or an attempted suicide

• Feelings of abandonment or fear of being abandoned by loved ones

A person who is depressed may also suffer from other symptoms including:


• Low self esteem and self loathing

• Neglect of appearance and personal hygiene

• Physical aches and pains with no obvious physical cause

• Fear of going mad or ‘losing it'

• Emotional outbursts

• Feeling aggressive or irritable

• Alcohol or substance abuse

Some people may suffer from a milder form of depression known as Dysthymia before going on to develop more major depressive episodes. Dysthymia is characterised by lack of enjoyment or pleasure in life that has continued for a period of two years. The difference between this type of depression and clinical depression is in the severity of the symptoms. Sometimes, a person can suffer from Dysthymia with episodes of major depressing occurring alongside, which is known as double depression.

Possible triggers of clinical depression

Although depression can strike any one of us at any time and for no apparent reason, there are certain factors that are known to increase the risk of triggering a depressive episode and these include:

• Stressful situations or events

• Relationship problems

• Long term illness

• Having a negative or pessimistic outlook on life

• Alcohol and substance abuse

• A history of depression in the family

• Chemical imbalances in the brain

In classical migraine the headache is preceded by an aura, which may take the form of visual disturbance, tingling or pins and needles or problems with coordination. Typically the aura lasts between 15 minutes and an hour and occasionally people can experience the aura without a headache.

Abdominal migraine often occurs in children and is characterised by episodic attacks of abdominal pain which may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Usually there is no headache.
There are other rare forms of migraine but these are the main types.

The cause of migraine is believed to be the release of chemicals in the body, which affect the neurotransmitters and blood vessels in the brain. Exactly why this happens is not known however factors have been identified which can trigger attacks in susceptible people. These include emotional stress, physical stress, environmental factors, certain foods and hormonal factors.
Often it is a combination of triggers that precipitate the headache.

Migraine can affect people of all ages, social classes races and cultures. It is however most prevalent between the ages of 20 and 50 years and two thirds of those affected are women. There may be a genetic predisposition as the condition often runs in families.

There is no cure for migraine but the condition can be helped with a variety of treatments and lifestyle changes.
Over the counter painkillers such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen can give some immediate relief.
Anti sickness medicines are often prescription only and should be obtained from your doctor who can also prescribe stronger painkillers and migraine specific drugs.
Very frequent attacks may require long-term preventative treatment from your doctor. Such treatments rarely eliminate migraine but can reduce the frequency and or severity of the attacks.

Apart from avoiding triggers to which you know you are sensitive it is important for migraine sufferers to eat regularly and include plenty of slow release carbohydrate foods in their diet. Sugary snacks should be avoided.
Drink plenty of water and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol. Regular exercise, regular sleep pattern and plenty of fresh air are also important.
Wear sunglasses or a hat in bright sunlight and if you work at a VDU take regular breaks.

Learning to relax and leading a healthy lifestyle are also helpful. It takes some effort but with time it should be possible to manage the condition effectively.

Before the term ADHD was first coined, the disease was simply referred to as hyperactivity. In this article we'll briefly go over what ADHD is, what causes it and some alternative treatments for this disease.

ADHD is a learning disorder that is characterized by extreme hyperactivity. Children cannot sit still for very long, if at all, and at times can be manic.

The cause is basically an imbalance in the chemicals in the brain, similar to the same kind of imbalances one would find in cases of depression. But the underlying causes all come down to nutrition. Almost all children who exhibit signs of ADHD have diets that are high in sugar. But sugar isn't the only cause. Some children experience this problem because of allergies to wheat, chocolate and many food additives such as preservatives. In some cases, children who were oxygen deprived during childbirth, suffer from this problem. In most cases though, it comes down to nutrition and lack of discipline in the home.

Hormones like glucagon and insulin regulate the level of sugar in your blood, thus avoiding diabetes. This two hormones are secreted by your pancreas and are the key in protecting you from diabetes. The most important thing to know in this case is that the production of these two hormones is the ultimate thing that protects us form diabetes or any other sugar related problems that you might suffer from.

First let us talk about the first important hormone in avoiding diabetes; insulin. It is produced by the beta cells of your pancreas. What makes your body produce insulin is of course a high sugar level in your blood. Without the production of this hormone, you will suffer from diabetes. To protect you from diabetes, when the levels of glucose in your blood are high, the insulin produced is higher, and the other way around, thus doing everything it can to protect you from diabetes.

Glucagon, the other hormone that fights against diabetes is produced by the alpha cells of your pancreas. This hormone works the other way around than insulin, because the both are very tighten up together in fitting against diabetes. So if you have a high level of glucose in your blood, than no glucagon will be produced, because at the same time insulin will do it' s part in avoiding diabetes. On the other hand, if the levels are too low, glucagon is produced. What this hormone does in fighting against diabetes is to make your liver release all the glucose that it has stored. But this hormone does that, making sure that it does not increase the glucose in your blood, thus leading to diabetes.

The normal level of glucose in a person that does not suffer from diabetes is somewhere between 70 to 100 mg/ dl. Any diabetes test should be taken after fasting, because right after you eat, you level of glucose tends to get a little bit higher, but that does not mean you have diabetes.

Insulin is a very necessary hormone in fighting against diabetes. The type 1 diabetes happens in people whose islet cells do not produce any insulin. The second type of diabetes, the type 2 diabetes develops in people who, somehow, have developed a resistance to insulin. In this second case of diabetes, the levels of insulin that one has are almost the same or even higher than in a person that does not suffer from diabetes. But the difference is that people who have diabetes, have a problem with their cells, which do not respond to insulin.
